Overland Track Itinerary
The duration can be amended and some do walk faster. Below is the most common program.
Day 1: Ronny Creek to Waterfall Valley
Some say the hardest day. The track starts fairly level and then climbs steeply to Marions Lookout. Then across the Cradle Plateau and dropping down to the Waterfall Valley Hut. The side trip up Cradle Mountain takes around 2 hours return and starts at Kitchen Hut.
Day 2: Waterfall Valley to Lake Windermere (2 hours)
The easy day. The hut is in the forest next to the lake. A chance to swim in the summer! If you are doing the overland track in less days, then go on to Pelion Hut. A long but possible day.
If you want to walk more than climb Barn Bluff and takes 3 hours. You can leave your bags at the Waterfall Valley Hut.
Day 3: Windermere Hut to Pelion Hut (5.5 hours)
Start on the buttongrass plain with views of Mt Pelion West and then through forest with tree roots slowing progress reaching your lowest point at 720m. The New Pelion Hut is one of the best huts on the track. There is a good swimming hole at the Old Pelion Hut.
Day 4: Pelion Hut to Kia Ora Hut (3 hours)
Climb to Pelion Gap. Take the side trip to Mt Ossa if the weather is clear. The climb is easy and takes around 3 hours return. Descend to Kia Ora Hut next to Kia Ora Creek.
Day 5: Kia Ora Hut to Windy Ridge Hut (3 hours)
Pass the historic Du Cane Hut built in 1908 through forest climbing to Du Cane Gap (1070m) and down to Windy Ridge Hut.
Day 6: Windy Ridge Hut to Narcissus (3 hours)
Take the 1pm Lake St Clair ferry out, but make sure you have booked. An alternative is to walk to Cynthia Bay a distance of 17km. If you do this option, you should stay at Narcissus Hut on the night of day 5 or at Echo Point which is half way along Lake St Clair.
